8. George Best

George’s last name was quite apt when describing his offensive skill level on the soccer pitch, but his off-the-field actions told a different story. While Best is widely known as one of the best soccer players of all time, he struggled with alcoholism throughout his life, a battle which led to his death in 2005 at the age of 59.

It was a life full of ups and downs for the supremely talented midfielder, who starred for Manchester United and Northern Ireland’s national team throughout the 1960’s and ’70’s. Best led Man U to two Premier League Championships and earned the title of European Player of the Year in 1968.

Best was the toast of the British Isles at that time, as he was known as the “Fifth Beatle” for his relatively long hair and celebrity status. Best also partied like a rock star, and a life full of drinking, gambling and womanizing led to Best going bankrupt from 1982 to 1992.

At least Best took his financial woes in stride, once famously saying, “I spent 90% of my money on women and drink. The rest I wasted.”
